How to Read a Card

What Each Label Means

  • Trail
  • Track or Loop
  • Park
  • Rec Center or Gym

Many places carry more than one label. A park with a paved loop shows both Park and Track or Loop. The list under each name repeats the official page. Where a page gives two lengths for one path, the card says so.

The drive line uses the mileage and minutes this site keeps for each city, measured from the studio at 220 Thunderbird Dr in Richmond Hill. Treat the figures as approximate, and check a maps app for today's route.

Each city also links to its Sports Massage page on this site. The link goes to a page about that service in that city. It is not a statement about any place on the list.

Before You Head Out

Warm Up, Cool Down, Check the Weather

General information from public health and sports medicine sources. If you have a health condition, an injury or symptoms, check with a healthcare professional first.

Warm Up

  • Spend 5 to 10 minutes on low-level aerobic movement before harder effort. Source: MedlinePlus (NIH)
  • A basic warm-up routine takes at least 6 minutes. Stop if you feel pain or become unwell. Source: NHS
  • Start slowly and pick up the pace gradually. Source: CDC

Cool Down

In the Heat

  • Heat injury risk is high when the outdoor temperature is above 80 °F and humidity is above 75 percent. ACSM suggests exercising indoors at those levels. Source: ACSM
  • Exercise early in the morning or late in the evening, in loose, lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing. Source: ACSM
  • After a sudden move to a hot place, cut intensity and session length. Adapting takes 10 to 14 days of repeated exercise in the heat. Source: ACSM
  • Faint or weak? Stop all activity and get to a cool place. Get medical care right away for symptoms of heat illness. Source: CDC
  • Trouble concentrating while very hot is a reason to contact emergency services immediately. Source: ACSM
  • Hydrate before, during and after activity. Source: NATA

In the Cold

  • Cover the head, face, legs, feet and hands. Wet conditions raise the risk of cold injury. Source: ACSM
  • Adjust clothing and layers to stay warm without sweating too much. Source: ACSM
  • Change out of wet clothing promptly. Rain, sweat or cold water chills the body, even above 40 °F. Source: CDC
  • Shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands and slurred speech are warning signs of hypothermia. A body temperature below 95 °F needs medical help immediately. Source: CDC

Thunder and Lightning

Safety note: stop and get medical care for chest pain, fainting, trouble breathing, sudden severe pain, numbness or weakness.

What Is Not Here

Gaps in the List

Some cities have few places with an official page that states the features. Several show only two of their own. Pembroke and Sun City Hilton Head show nearby public places instead. A place is left out when no official page states what it has.

The list names no school, team or club. It covers public parks, trails, school and municipal tracks, rec centers and refuges, each from an official page.

School campus tracks are left out unless an official page lists them as open to the public.

After the Workout

Recovery Tools for the Week

Pair a new route with a recovery plan. The Weekly Training and Recovery Calendar lays out hard days, easy days, sleep and mobility. The Sweat Rate and Hydration Calculator shows how to measure the fluid a workout takes out.

Questions About This Tool

Where Do the Addresses and Features Come From?

From the official city, county, state park or wildlife refuge page linked on each card. A feature appears only when that page states it. Nothing is added from memory or from review sites.

Why Are Hours and Conditions Missing?

Hours, closures and trail conditions change, so the list leaves them out. The official page linked on each card shows the current ones.

Why Does a Card Show a City Other Than the One I Picked?

A card marked Nearby sits in a neighboring city. The page uses the nearby-city lists the site already keeps for each city, and the card states where the place is.

Why Does Sun City Hilton Head Have No Places of Its Own?

Sun City Hilton Head is an age-restricted community, and no official public park or trail page for it was found. Its list shows public places in the surrounding Okatie and Bluffton area.

Are These Places Ranked?

No. Cities follow the site's usual order and places carry no ranking or rating. Each place is a verified listing, nothing more.

How Do I Print a List for My City?

Pick your city, then press Print. The printout holds only the cities showing on screen, with the date the list was checked.
